　　Another primary health risk associated with smoking are lung cancer, which kills more than 20,000 people in the UK every year.

　　US studies have shown that men who smoke increase their chances of dying from the disease by more than 22 times.

　　Women who smoke increase this risk by nearly 12 times.

　　Lung cancer is a difficult cancer to treat - long term survival rates are poor.

　　Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and cervical cancers, and leukaemia.

　　Another health problem associated with tobacco is emphysema, which, when combined with chronic bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

　　I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.

　　It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences “I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate”.

　　Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself “I can handle it” when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.

　　Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.

　　So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

To a large extend the environmental destruction is the heavy price that we pay for the rapid development of economy and the growing population. In order to have more fuel people cut down trees and dig more corals. But the growing needs for energy are hardly to meet. Countless private cars on the street the gas stations are short of gasoline even the government has raise the price so many times in order to control the needs of gasoline but it’s still not working. Overusing the natural resources has already affected the ecological balance. However the factories still release the toxic air into the sky and the polluted water into the rivers. People still lack of the conscious of protecting the environment. I think it’s time for all of us to do something.

　　进入新世界以来，环境污染比任何时候都要严峻。有各式各样的污染：水污染，空气污染，噪音污染等等。看起来我们活着一个四周都是污染源的星球。那么，这些污染是从何而来的呢?在很大程度上，环境被破坏就是我们为快速的经济增长和人口增加所付出的惨烈代价。为了得到更多的能源，人们砍伐树木，挖更多的煤矿，但是还是难以维持日益增长的需求。不计其数的私家车充斥着公路，加油站的汽油严重短缺，*多次上调油价也未能阻止私家车对汽油的需求。自然资源的过度利用已经影响到了生态*衡。然而，工厂依旧向外排放有毒气体，把工业废水倒入河里。人们依旧缺乏保护环境的意识。我认为人们应该做些事情了。

　　The government should put forward some more strict laws to prevent the environment from being further polluted. And they should let people know more about the importance of environment protection. And we should find the balance between the economic growth and environmental protection. Plant more trees in the deserts and stop cutting down the forest. Forbid the factories to pour the waste water into the rivers directly. Encourage people to use public transportations to work. Both government and ordinary people should join hands together to make our home clean and fresh again. Only in this way our earth could be a better place to live in.

　　Ladies and Gentlemen: My topic is Honesty.

　　As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Commi* for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragons tooth. This is a true story.

　　65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.

　　In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragons mouth.

　　He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 20**, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

　　When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was dee* touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct ones error.

　　Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Lets be honest people of good moral character.
